Case Study – The Wharf Mooloolaba

The Specifics:

The Client: The Wharf Mooloolaba

Location: Mooloolaba

Construction completed: March 2019

The Brief:

The Wharf Mooloolaba operate a passive craft hire business whereby the public can hire jet skis and kayaks from their facility on the Mooloolah River. They had some operational difficulties and wanted to increase free space on their pontoon and operate their hire business more safely.

The Challenges:

  • Kayaks were taking up a lot of space on the pontoon as they were stored laying down
  • The Kayaks were awkward to move and a safety risk to handle, resulting in higher operational cost

The Outcomes:

The Jetty Specialist were approached to provide a design and construct solution. To ensure the project outcome met the clients objectives, TJS took the following approach:

  • Gain an understanding of the client’s problems and constraints
  • Develop several concept solutions and discuss with the client
  • Identify the preferred solution, develop the design and undertake engineering studies
  • Fabrication was completed at TJS facilities in Caloundra
  • Testing was carried out in The Jetty Specialist test pond (see photo on right) to ensure the theoretical buoyancy levels were as expected.
  • The kayak rack was then installed onsite, and testing was done with the client to ensure it worked as designed
The project was a complete success, providing safe handling of kayaks and saving space on the pontoon. As a bonus, the vertical kayaks are aesthetically pleasing, drawing interest from local passers-by.
